Itinerary

Arrival in Sri Lanka

Land at Bandaranaike International Airport and transfer north to Kalpitiya. Check into a coastal lodge as the sun sets over the placid lagoon waters. Spend the early evening at leisure, explore the shoreline, watch traditional fishing boats return with their catch, or enjoy an optional sunset lagoon walk or horse ride along the beach, setting the scene for a natural journey ahead.

Birdlife & Culture

An optional morning dolphin watching excursion off Kalpitiya Peninsula may offer sightings of spinner dolphins, and the bay hosts one of the largest dolphin pods. Drive inland, stopping at the Anawilundawa Wetland Sanctuary, a Ramsar-listed wetland with migratory waterbirds, painted storks and endemic species. Continue to Anuradhapura and settle into your eco-lodge.

Wilpattu National Park Safari

An early morning departure to Wilpattu National Park. Famous for its natural lakes set within dense jungle, Wilpattu offers sightings of leopards, sloth bears, elephants, and water buffalo in a wonderfully remote setting. A full-day jeep safari with a picnic lunch included means maximum time tracking wildlife with expert local guides who know every trail and waterhole.

Anuradhapura Ancient City

Spend a full morning exploring Anuradhapura. Visit the sacred Sri Maha Bodhi, a fig tree grown from a cutting of the tree under which the Buddha attained enlightenment, towering stupas, royal bathing ponds and ancient monasteries. The optional sunset bicycle tour through the outer ruins adds an atmospheric golden-hour dimension to this heritage experience.

Sigiriya & Dambulla

Drive south into the heart of the Cultural Triangle. An optional morning safari at Minneriya National Park during the seasonal ‘Gathering’ period offers one of the natural world’s most extraordinary spectacles, hundreds of wild elephants converging on the vast reservoir to feed and socialise. Continue to the Sigiriya-Dambulla area for an afternoon village experience.

Rock Climb & Leisure

The early morning belongs to Sigiriya. Climb past the famous Sigiriya Frescoes, 21 remaining paintings of celestial maidens rendered in vivid natural pigments and the polished mirror wall to reach the vast summit gardens and palace ruins. The afternoon is at total leisure: the resort pool, a spa treatment, or a sunset visit to the quieter Pidurangala Rock.

Kandy Temple & Cultural Night

A relaxed morning before the drive south to Kandy, the Hill Capital. Upon arrival, visit the venerated Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic as the ceremonial evening puja begins, a deeply atmospheric experience of drumming, incense, and devotional ritual. An optional lakeside stroll or traditional cultural dance performance rounds out the evening in this mountain city.

Iconic Scenic Train

Board the scenic mountain train from Kandy for an iconic journey through tea estates, cloud forests, and valley villages. One of the world’s great rail experiences, the colonial-era train winds through breathtaking landscapes. Arrive in Ella, check into your hillside retreat, and visit the Nine Arch Bridge at sunset for a magical first evening.

Udawalawe National Park

A sunrise visit to Nine Arch Bridge and a short hike to Little Adam’s Peak complete your Ella morning before driving south to Udawalawe, home to Sri Lanka’s most reliably visible elephant herds. The open plains and reservoir edges offer excellent game viewing, with large herds of Asian elephants in full sight. Settle into your safari lodge for dinner with your guide.

Elephant Safari & Transit Home

Dedicate the morning to a game drive in Udawalawe National Park, one of Asia’s best places to observe large herds of wild Asian elephants at close range. Expert naturalist guides explain their behaviour and conservation. In the afternoon, visit the Elephant Transit Home, a rehabilitation centre for orphaned calves preparing for release into the wild.

South Coast, Surf & Galle

Drive to the south coast, stopping at Galle Fort for an immersive walk through colonial streets, the Dutch church, lighthouse, and artisan boutiques along the ramparts. Continue to Weligama or Mirissa, famed surf towns. Enjoy an optional beginner surf lesson in Weligama Bay’s gentle waves, with seasonal whale watching offshore adding further magic.

Departure

Savour one last morning by the Indian Ocean before transferring to Colombo via the Southern Expressway. Depending on your flight time, enjoy a final cafe stop or boutique shopping in the city. A smooth airport transfer follows, concluding your journey through Sri Lanka’s wildlife, culture, heritage, and coastal beauty.
